An assembly that automatically compensates for backlash. The assembly includes two nut portions (20,50) engaged to prevent relative rotation but permit relative movement in an axial direction. A sleeve (70) is disposed between the nut portions with the opposite ends of the sleeve abutting annular rims (34,64) formed on the nut portions. One end of the sleeve has at least one helical ramp (80a,b,c) extending around the its periphery that abuts a complementarily shaped ramp formed on the annular rim of one of the nut portions, while the other end of the sleeve has a flat outer surface (76) abutting the flat annular rim (64) of the other nut portion. A torsion spring (90) has tangs (94,96) secured to the sleeve and one of the nut portions and biases the sleeve rotatively with respect to the nut portions. As backlash arises between the threads of the nut portions and those of a lead screw engaged with the nut portions, rotation of the sleeve causes the ramps on the sleeve to cam against the ramps on the one nut portion to move the nut portions axially away from each other, thereby forcing the threads of the nut portions into engagement with the threads of the lead screw. <IMAGE> |
