<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical shaft type rotating electric machine equipped with an oil-film state monitor that can detect a bearing abnormal phenomenon in an early stage by exactly measuring a change in the film thickness of the oil film of lubricating oil in a thrust bearing device. <P>SOLUTION: The oil-film state monitor is configured such that oil-film sensors 24 are fixed at sides of at least one or more thrust sectors 18 among a plurality of thrust sectors 18 arranged at the fixed side, and the thickness of the oil film is obtained by measuring an axial distance to the lower face 19a of a thrust runner 19 by using the oil-film sensor 24. The oil-film sensors 24 are fixed to the side of the downstream in the rotative direction of the thrust runner of the thrust sector 18, or fixed to both the side of the downstream and the side of the upstream in the rotative direction of the thrust runner.
