PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control method for an automatic transmission capable of realizing smooth turning operation even if an accelerator is opened in cornering. SOLUTION: In this control method for the automatic transmission, when the increasing rate of a throttle opening exceeds a specified value, the transmission is shifted down to controllably increase the gear ratio of the transmission. A slip determination threshold T is determined by using the steering angleαof a vehicle, and the wheel velocity Vs of rear wheels is detected, the wheel velocity Vs is calculated for uniformization to calculate a uniformized vehicle velocity Va. When a difference between the wheel velocity Vs and the uniformized vehicle velocity Va exceeds the slip determination threshold T, the condition of the vehicle is determined to be in the slip state and the shift-down of the transmission is prohibited.
