PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To design a manipulator by an inexperienced person using the stored knowledge and experience of an expert in a short development period without computing to determine axial configuration. SOLUTION: According to this design support method and system for a manipulator, a joint axis of the manipulator is stored as a database 1 of a joint module, and the axial configuration and link length are inferred from the required specifications of a manipulator to be designed by an inference engine 3. Further, the joint module conformable to the inferred axial configuration and link length is selected from the database 1, the manipulator is digitally mocked up by a decision means, and the digitally mocked up manipulator is simulated in three dimensions to confirm the operation.
