<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an authentication system that is independent of a client terminal and is adaptable even to the adoption of a different authentication system by an individual server. <P>SOLUTION: The authentication system comprises a server for providing services using a network, a user's IC card and a client terminal, and exchanges data between the server and the IC card via the client terminal to authenticate the user as an IC card holder in the server. The IC card 5 comprises a processor 51 and a storage 52, and has an encryption processing program 5211 loaded in an application program storage part 521 of the storage 52, as a function necessary in the user side for the server to authenticate a particular user.
