PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for detecting a header region of an optical recording medium being rewritable. SOLUTION: When a read-channel 1 signal is utilized, the signal is passed through a low pass filter, the output is compared with a fixed slice level, when it is the above or more, it is judged as a header region. When a read-channel 2 signal is utilized, the signal is passed through a high pass filter, the output is shaped, a value obtained by shaping is compared with the slice level, when it is the value or less, it is judged as a header region.
