PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide images of high image quality by preventing the occurrence of a ghost phenomenon. SOLUTION: The image forming method uses a photoreceptor having a photoconductive layer consisting of a non-single crystalline material having silicon as a parent body and containing at least hydrogen atoms or halogen atoms. An exposure system in a latent image forming step is a background exposure method of exposing a non-image section (a background section). The peripheral length of a transfer member is integer times the peripheral length of the photoreceptor. The photoconductive layer is formed by laminating at least a first layer region and second layer region varying in the contents of at least the hydrogen atoms or halogen atoms in this order on a conductive substrate. The image forming method in which the content of the hydrogen atoms or halogen atoms in the first layer region ranges from 15 to 30 atm% and the content of the hydrogen atoms or halogen atoms in the second layer region ranges from 10 to 25 atm% and is lower as compared with that in the first layer region is provided.
