The invention relates to a seal (1,11,21) which can be placed in a groove (5,25), enabling a simple assembly even when components (4,8,20,27) to be sealed are difficult to access. To this end, the seal (1,11,21) has a shape with an overdimension such that it can be fixed against the lateral walls (7) of the groove (5,25), at least in order to hold itself in a press fit. The aim of the invention is to ensure long-lasting and reliable sealing with a seal (1,11,21) comprising a base part (2,12) facing the base of the groove (6) and an upper part (3,13) opposing the base of the groove (6). To this end, the overdimension is provided on the base part (2,12) of the seal, and the seal (1,11,21) is designed in such a way that a free area is provided in relation to the groove (5,25), above the base part (2,12). The seal (1,11,21) can yield inside said free area when a force is applied to its upper part (3,13).
