A filter bed for a melt-spinning apparatus provides a filter surface at the interface 10 between a body 8 of fine grain material, e.g. sand, and a body 7 of coarser material. The body 8 is in the form of an upright tube closed at the top and this is filled and surrounded by the coarser material. On top of the whole system there is provided a layer 9 of especially coarse material. The Specification describes a mould for making the filter.
