PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline primary battery showing an excellent discharge characteristic even in heavy load discharge after high-temperature storage, and having an excellent storage characteristic. SOLUTION: This alkaline primary battery has: a positive electrode 1 containing nickel oxyhydroxide as a positive electrode active material; a gelatinous negative electrode 4 containing zinc as a negative electrode active material; an alkaline electrolyte; and a separator. By adding a ytterbium compound or an erbium compound in the gelatinous negative electrode, the alkaline primary battery is composed. The addition quantity of the ytterbium compound or the erbium compound is preferably 0.004-3.5 mass% in terms of a metal element with respect to zinc. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
