PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disc reproducing device which can accurately output a subpicture signal within a short period of time in shifting from specialized reproduction operation such as scanning operation like manual search, slow motion replay and double speed reproduction to ordinary reproduction operation. SOLUTION: The device is constituted with a directive part, a subpicture unit generation means for generating the subpicture unit from subpicture data, a storage part for storing the subpicture unit, a reproduction means for reproducing the subpicture unit stored by the storage part, and a control part which, in shifting from the specialized reproduction operation to the ordinary reproduction operation based on an instruction from the directive part, detects whether the subpicture unit is stored in the storage part, when the subpicture unit is detected not to be stored, reads the subpicture data starting at a point with predesignated period of time back from an ordinary reproduction starting moment for video data recorded on a recording medium, and controls for generating the subpicture and storing the subpicture in the storage part.
