PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet image forming apparatus in which image quality is prevented from deteriorating by preventing irregularities from appearing on the surface of a recording sheet surely without causing any trouble in the carriage of the recording sheet. SOLUTION: A scuff preventive roller 81 is disposed oppositely to a platen 53 such that the scuff preventive roller 81 can vary a pressing force directed toward the platen 53. When a recording sheet having a small thickness dimension is applied, cockling is prevented by setting the pressing force at a relatively low level. When a recording sheet having a large thickness dimension is applied, irregularities appearing on the surface of the recording sheet can be eliminated by setting the pressing force at a relatively high level.
