PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of defective electrostatic charge by preventing lifting in the case of using a roller whose hardness is high as a first electrostatic charging means 40 and in the case that the abutting pressure of the first electrostatic charging means 40 is low. SOLUTION: In an image forming apparatus which possesses the first electrostatic charging means and a second electrostatic charging means respectively from an upstream side at a position on the downstream side of a secondary transfer position in the moving direction of an intermediate transfer body and also on the upstream side of a primary transfer position and by which residual toner on the intermediate transfer body is electrostatically charged so as to have polarity reverse to the electrostatic charge polarity of toner after development after passing through the first electrostatic charging means and the second electrostatic charging means and also is transferred to an image carrier at the primary transfer position, the first electrostatic charging means comes into contact with the intermediate transfer body at an electrostatically charging time, and the image non-forming area of the intermediate transfer body possesses a position detection mark, and the connection nip area of the first electrostatic charging means to the intermediate transfer body does not pass the position detection mark.
