PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a pretreatment agent for ink-jet printing, which imparts excellent storage stability to treated cloth, and provides an image of printed cloth with high density, no bleeding and sharp clearness similar immediately after processing and after long-term preservation. SOLUTION: The pretreatment agent for ink-jet printing is obtained by using an ethylene oxide-propylene oxide random copolymer having the copolymerization ratio of ethylene oxide to propylene oxide of 10:1-1:1 and 100,000-1,500,000 average molecular weight as an ink retainer, mixing the ink retainer with urea or thiourea as a wetting agent and further a pH adjuster and a reduction inhibitor. The pretreatment agent may optionally be mixed with a penetrating agent and a bleed inhibitor. The cloth to be printed having long-term preservability and excellent processability is obtained by applying an aqueous solution of the pretreatment agent to a cellulosic fiber cloth.
