PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chemically stable liquid crystalline compound having excellent compatibility with other liquid crystalline compound, negatively large dielectric anisotropy and adequate optical anisotropy. SOLUTION: The compound is represented by formula (1) (wherein Ra and Rb are each a 1-20C alkyl in which an arbitrary CH2may be replaced by O, S or the like and arbitrary hydrogen may be replaced by a halogen; A1, A2, A3and A4are each 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or the like, in which arbitrary hydrogen may be replaced by a halogen, trifluoromethyl, difluoromethyl, fluoromethyl or the like; at least one of A1, A2, A3and A4is 3-difluoromethyl-2-trifluoromethyl-1,4-phenylene; Z1, Z2and Z3are each a single bond or a 1-4C alkylene in which arbitrary CH2of the alkylene may be replaced by O, S or the like; m and n are each 0 or 1).
