Aqueous black ink-jet ink containing a surfactant and a penetration aid and/or evaporation aid contains no diethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether, propylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether or dipropylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether and also (if an evaporation aid is present) no pyrrolidone or pyrrolidone derivatives. Aqueous black ink-jet ink containing 5-50 wt% organic solvent, 0.01-2 wt% surfactant, 0.5-3 wt% penetration promoter and/or evaporation promoter, 1-12 wt% black pigment and water (to make up 100 wt%). This ink contains no diethylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether, propylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether or dipropylene glycol mono-n-butyl ether and, if an evaporation promoter is present, the ink contains no pyrrolidone or pyrrolidone derivatives.
