Mechanical energy is supplied to the treatment vessel containing the mercury and the selenium or sulfur. This vessel is sealed to prevent air from entering. A method for rendering liquid mercury harmless using selenium and/or sulfur comprises supplying mechanical energy to the treatment vessel whilst preventing air from entering. An independent claim is also included for the treatment apparatus, comprising a sealed reactor which can be stored with the material inside it, without the need for any post-treatment steps. -
