PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a shock from occurring by preventing a wrong detection of recognizing a temporary drop of an input rotation speed as a step-out when a shift from an N range to an R range is made. SOLUTION: An automatic transmission for a vehicle comprises a first and a second engaging elements C1 and B2 to be connected in the R range, and hydraulic pressure is instantly supplied to the first engaging element C1 when a shift from the N range to the R range is made, and hydraulic pressure is supplied to the second engaging member B2 with a delay. When the rotation speed of a turbine becomes not higher than a judgement value lower than the rotation speed in the N range, accompanying the shift from the N range to the R range, the pressure supplied to the second element B2 is increased at a specified inclination of time from this point of time. The judgement value when temperature of automatic transmission oil is not higher than a specified temperature is set lower as compared with a value in the case when the temperature of the oil is higher than the specified temperature. For this reason, even if the input rotation speed should temporarily fall due to quick engagement of the first engaging element at a low temperature, a wrong detection of recognizing the temporary drop as a step-out is avoided.
