PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller which can make a lifting amount and a valve opening period desirable, in a valve system which moves a cam shaft having a tapered cam face in the axial direction and changes the lift amount and valve opening period of an engine valve at the same time. SOLUTION: This controller for variable valve system which can move the cam shaft 1 having the tapered cam face in the axial direction by a drive 5 and changes the valve opening period and maximum lifting amount of the engine valve by a large or small amount at the same time. While the engine valve is opening, the reaction acting upon the cam shaft in the axial direction, and pressure in the opposite direction is made to act onto the cam shaft so that the reaction may be compensated for only while the reaction is occurring.
