PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a specific kind of machine for optimally tamping a total of 4 sleepers in a structurally simplified method. SOLUTION: The machine for tamping the sleepers 2 of a track is provided with tamping devices 13 which are placed to face each other in a crosswise direction of the machine. Each of the tamping devices comprises four pairs of tamping tines 14, 15, 16 and 17 which are arranged continuously in a longitudinal direction of the machine. These pairs of tamping tines are alternately arranged in a longitudinal direction of the machine at a comparatively short distance x from a center 21 of the machine for tamping a sleeper supporting member 23 positioned inside rails, and at a comparatively long distance y from the center 21 of the machine for tamping the sleeper supporting member 25 positioned outside the rails.
