PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight assembly commonly usable in both directions.

SOLUTION: The backlight assembly is composed of a first light guide plate 120 having a first light-incident surface 121, first light reflection surfaces 123a, 123b with a level difference jointed to the first light-incident surface 121 and a first light-emitting surface 125 facing the first light reflection surface; a second light guide plate having a second light-incident surface 131 coincident with the first light-incident surface 121, a second light reflection surface facing the first light reflection surface with a level difference jointed to the second light-incident surface 131, and a second light-emitting surface 133 facing the second light reflection surface 135; and a reflection plate 140 intercalated in a gap formed between the first light guide plate having the level difference and the second light guide plate.
