PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which is free from transfer failures even when transferring an image with a belt member and ensures satisfactory image uniformity. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus has a primary transfer roller 10 which abuts on an intermediate transfer belt 9 in order that a toner image formed on a photoreceptor drum 1 is transferred to a rotating intermediate transfer belt 9, and has a position detection mark 21 at the edge of the intermediate transfer belt 9 in order to detect the position of the intermediate transfer belt 9. The position detection mark 21 passes through a nip between the intermediate transfer belt 9 and the primary transfer roller 10. The shape of the primary transfer roller 10 on the positition detection mark side and that on the position non-detection side are different in the axial direction of the roller.
