PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus in which an image reading unit is easily operated by minimizing a signal transmission quantity between the moving image-reading unit and a signal processing circuit, and by reducing configurational and operational burdens. SOLUTION: Image signals read with line sensor CCD 1 to 5 are converted to 16 bit digital signals A(n) and B(n), then converted to an 8-bit divided signal Dout by using a multiplexer 44, and outputted to a signal processing circuit 40 as a 1 bit serial signal Sout by using a parallel/serial converter 46.
