This elevator system comprises a means for setting a first set speed which varies according to the position of a cage in a hoistway, a means for setting a second set speed which is higher than the first set speed, and varies according to the position of the cage in the hoistway, a mechanical brake which is operated when the cage speed of the elevator exceeds the first set speed, and an emergency stopper which is operated when the cage speed of the elevator exceeds the second set speed.</p>
