PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording/reproducing device in which data can appropriately be recorded again and the reliability is enhanced, and to provide a re-recording processing method thereof. SOLUTION: In the recording/reproducing device, data recorded on an optical disk 1 are reproduced using a maximum likelihood decoding method, deterioration in the recording characteristic relative to the recording region of the data on the disk 1 is discriminated based on reproduced signals and re-recording of the data is performed. The device is provided with a difference metric computer 10 in which subtractions are made among likelihood computed by the maximum likelihood decoding method to obtain likelihood differences, aσcomputer 11 which computes deviationσthat is an index of deterioration in the recording characteristic from the frequency distribution of the generation frequency for the likelihood differences, comparators 12 and 13 which compare the deviationσand first and second prescribed values and a controller 9 which determines whether or not re-recording of the data is to be conducted based on the comparison result.
