PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the efficient and effective method and device for retrieving a huge amount of still image data and moving image data distributed on a distributed network. SOLUTION: In a distributed network, a search key image being the object of image collation is transferred only to a computer selected by a hierarchy analytical method being one of decision making means. An inter-computer service delay time obtained by adding an inter-computer network delay time to an image collation executing time, the number of times of access to each computer on the basis of the retrieval result by a user, and user meta information constituted of meta information added to image data read by the user in the past image data retrieval are used as evaluating elements in the hierarchy analytical method. Also, a computer where an arithmetic unit having a function for executing the retrieval processing, a storage device, and an output device or the like are combined and mounted is used as a device for embodying the retrieval method.
