PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an open shield machine capable of preventing or reducing the collapse of soil and sand existing on the outside from the side face plate of the open shield machine in the propulsive process of by the shield machine. SOLUTION: The open shield machine has a movable plate movably supported in the longitudinal direction so as to be freely retractable in the vicinity of at least one front edges of both side face plates of the open shield machine and a driving means driving the movable plate in the longitudinal direction. In the open shield machine, a plurality of the movable plates may also be disposed in the vertical direction along one front edges. In the shield machine, the movable plates may also be disposed to both side face plates. In the shield machine, an edge may also be formed along the front edge of the movable plate.
