PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a Z-bending method by which D value and the stroke are determined by calculation and necessary Z-bending is performed when the data of a die shape and the thickness of a work are inputted to a numerical controller by generalizing the complicated shape of a Z-bending die. SOLUTION: In this Z-bending method for a planar material, a lower die in which angles formed by the center line L<SB>1</SB>of the V groove of the lower die 3 and right and left slopes (5, 7) are taken asθ<SB>1</SB>,θ<SB>2</SB>and angles formed by the center line L<SB>2</SB>of a peak part 13 which is continued to the V groove and right and left slopes (7, 11) asθ<SB>2</SB>,θ<SB>3</SB>and an upper die 2 corresponding to the lower die are used. In this method, dies to be used are selected among the upper and lower dies so that either of a pair of slopes of a plurality of corresponding slopes in the upper and lower dies becomes coining and bending by the dimensional relation of theθ<SB>1</SB>, theθ<SB>2</SB>, theθ<SB>3</SB>, the D value and the stroke at the coining and bending in the selected dies are determined by calculation and the Z-bending is performed by taking the D value and the stroke determined by the calculation as the control data of the Z-bending.
