REAR PROJECTION SCREEN ADAPTED FOR A FREE-SPACE APPLICATION

A rear projection screen specifically adapted for a free-space application, the use of this screen and a projection system with this screen. This screen comprises a light transmitting material, a rear surface on said light transmitting material for receiving light from a light source, and a front viewing surface, from which said light is emitted. Both of said surfaces exhibit a non-reflective behaviour. The rear surface is provided with a plurality of first elements arranged across the rear surface in a first configuration. The front viewing surface is provided with a plurality of second elements arranged across the front viewing surface in a second configuration and substantially perpendicular to the first elements. At least one of said two surfaces comprise a plurality of prism elements being formed as to enable incident light with a predetermined entry angle to the normal of the rear surface to be emitted with a predetermined exit angle to the normal of the front viewing surface. The light-transmitting material is provided with a diffusing agent for diffusing light, the agent preferably being concentrated in the portion of the screen adjacent to the rear surface to provide for an excellent light spreading effect both viewing angles.
