<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing, in a high yield, a lactone compound which has a structure formed by subjecting a tetracarboxylic acid compound to hydrogenation reduction under relatively mild conditions to lactonize a dicarboxylic acid group at one side of the tetracarboxylic acid compound while causing a dicarboxylic acid group at the other side to remain as it is. <P>SOLUTION: This production method for the lactone compound having both a lactone structure and a dicarboxylic acid group comprises the hydrogenation reduction of the tetracarboxylic acid in the presence of a catalyst composed of (1) ruthenium metal and/or its metallic compound and (2) rhenium metal and/or its metallic compound and (3) at least one compound selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, and compounds of these metals. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
