<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device which adjusts projection illuminance adaptively in accordance with an image signal by a simple constitution without changing color, and enhances apparent contrast to heighten presence. <P>SOLUTION: In the projection display device provided with a light source 1, liquid crystal light valves 4R, 4G, and 4B for modulating light emitted from the light source 1 by rotating the plane of polarization, and a projection lens 3 for projecting light modulated by the liquid crystal light valves 4R, 4G, and 4B on a projection face, a rotatable polarizer 205 is arranged between the light source 1 and liquid crystal light valves 4R, 4G, and 4B.
