PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an air separator and a control method of raw material air compressor capable of stabilizing the pressure of product nitrogen gas even if there is a demand change in the product nitrogen gas, and reducing the consumptive motive power of a raw material air compressor. SOLUTION: This air separator has the raw material air compressor 11, preprocessing equipment 12, a main heat exchanger 13, a single fractionating tower 14 and a product nitrogen gas deriving passage 17. A pressure detector (a pressure indication controller 21) is arranged in the product nitrogen gas deriving passage 17. The raw material air compressor 11 is provided with a flow rate controller (a guide vane 23) for controlling a delivery flow rate on the basis of a pressure value detected by the pressure indication controller 21, and the delivery flow rate of the raw material air compressor 11 is controlled so as to keep pressure of the product nitrogen gas constant on the basis of the detected pressure value by detecting a pressure change in the product nitrogen gas deriving passage 17 caused by a flow rate change in the product nitrogen gas derived from the product nitrogen gas deriving passage 17.
