The pumping power for driving an individual laser in an array is selected based on an operating state of at least one adjacent laser in the array, so that the individually driven laser generates a predetermined optical power. The operating state is either the on state or the off state. Independent claims are included for an apparatus for imaging a printing former using an array of lasers; a printing unit; and a printing machine.
