Catalytic composition (A) comprises a protein (I) that includes a binding pocket, and a catalytic unit (II) in the pocket. (II) includes a primary binding unit (PBU) that interacts with (I) and a catalyst unit (CU) is fitted in PBU. CU includes a transition metal and a secondary binding unit (SBU) that also interacts with (I). PBU and SBU are non-covalently bound in the pocket. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) methods for preparing (A); (2) method for performing a transition metal-catalyzed reaction using (A), in a two-phase system; (3) method for determining the optimal yield and selectivity of a target compound (X) and of a target reaction; and (4) device for determining yield, selectivity, kinetics and other experimental results for (X) in a reaction or process, where (X) has to be isolated from a mixture.
