Preparation of a 5-amino-4-nitrosopyrazole derivative (IV) comprises reacting a 3,3-dialkoxy-2-hydroxyiminopropionitrile derivative (I) with a hydrazine compound (III). Preparation of a 5-amino-4-nitrosopyrazole derivative of formula (IV) or its salt comprises reacting a 3,3-dialkoxy-2-hydroxyiminopropionitrile derivative of formula (I) with a hydrazine compound of formula H 2NNHR 4 (III) in the presence of an acid.
