[Also in Division F2] A self locking mounting ring for attaching a bearing, within a bore comprises a ring of elastomeric material 34 bonded to the outer surface of the bearing ring and having an outer surface adapted to be an interference fit within the bore, there being a plurality of angularly spaced curved metal elements 23 embedded in the elastomeric material with the outer surface of the elements exposed at the outer surface of the elastomeric material, each element having a portion whose radius of curvature is greater than the radius of curvature of the bore so that on insertion of the ring in the bore, each element engages the bore along two angularly spaced lines 44, 46. The ring is made by filling with elastomeric material the space between two concentric rings, the outer one of which has a plurality of angularly spaced axial grooves, and removing material from the outer ring so as to expose the elastomeric material at the locations of the grooves thereby isolating rigid segments in the surface of the elastomeric material. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the metal elements (52) are provided by a corrugated ring which has had its outer portion removed. |
