Laminates, having an embossed, compact layer up to 3 mm. thick of rubber, or rubber coated with a thin sheet of synthetic resin, and a foamed rubber or synthetic resin backing, are prepared by placing the precursor layers into an engraved preheated suction mould, applying a vacuum, and heating either the mould or the mould placed in a press in an autoclave in order to vulcanize or set the sponge and unite the layers. The mould is preheated to a temperature below the vulcanization temperature of the rubber and the setting temperature of the resin. Fig. 4 shows the laminate a, b in the mould which is held between press plates e and g, the latter carrying the lid of the mould h which presses the peripheral portion f of the laminate projecting from the chamber i. After vulcanizing the pressed and moulded laminate may be trimmed to obtain chamfered edges. |
