Process for thermal chlorinatn of hydrocarbons

Hydrocarbons are thermally chlorinated by introducing 0.01 to 0.1 mol. H2O per mol. Cl2, into the Cl-paraffin reaction mixture. Pref. the H2O and Cl2 are added together, and the Cl2 is pref. passed at 21.1 degrees C - 37.8 degrees C through chlorine-saturated H2O. The process relates more specifically to thermal chlorination of C9-C18 paraffinic hydrocarbons. The process allows a higher chlorine conversion to be achieved at a lower initiation temp., as compared with prior art processes.
