PURPOSE: A device and a method for preventing overheat of a CPU in a computer are provided to prevent the surface temperature rise of the CPU basically by interrupting the power operating the CPU in case that a heat discharging plate is not installed. CONSTITUTION: A detector(5) generates a detection signal by detecting installation of the heat discharging plate(3) on the CPU(4). A controller controls a power supply supplying the power to the CPU by judging the detection signal transmitted from the detector. The detector is a contact sensor or an optical sensor.
