PURPOSE: An operating method of a universal remote controller is provided to distinguish the first functional keys for controlling selected electronic apparatuses from the second functional keys except the first functional keys, thereby enabling a user to easily operate the electronic apparatuses without sufficient information. CONSTITUTION: A universal remote controller decides whether one of various electronic apparatuses is selected by a selection key(10). If so, the remote controller distinguishes the first functional keys for controlling the selected electronic apparatus from the second functional keys(12). When distinguishing the functional keys from each other, the controller distinguishes the third functional keys from the fourth functional keys. The controller decides whether the third functional keys are used within predetermined time. If so, the controller decides whether the third functional keys are reused. If not, the controller cancels a display of the third functional keys, and distinguishes the fifth functional keys from the sixth functional keys. The controller distinguishes all the first functional keys from the second functional keys. The controller decides whether one of all the first functional keys is used. If not, the controller cancels a display of all the first functional keys.
