PURPOSE: A lighting device, a method for driving the same and a display device are provided to achieve improved operating characteristics at a low temperature, and shorten the time taken to attain a desired luminance. CONSTITUTION: A lighting device(110 or 120) comprises a cold cathode fluorescent tube having a thermal capacity of 0.035Wsec/°C or lower per unit length of a glass tube, wherein the cold cathode fluorescent tube satisfies a formula Wv/lccft>=0.5 wherein Wv is heat value per unit volume(1cm¬3) of the glass tube and 1ccft is current of fluorescent tube. Approximately 95% or more of the total surface area of the fluorescent portion of the cold cathode fluorescent tube contacts air, and 50% or more of the light generated from the cold cathode fluorescent tube is used for lighting operation. The lighting device further includes a temperature detector for detecting ambient temperature of the cold cathode fluorescent tube; and a computing unit for setting a predetermined tube current on the basis of the temperature detected by the temperature detector.
