PURPOSE: A device and method for detecting the overturn of a vehicle is provided to precisely detect the overturn of the vehicle by measuring the distance between the bottom of the vehicle and a road surface with an ultrasonic sensor. CONSTITUTION: A device for detecting the overturn of a vehicle is composed of an ultrasonic sensor(110) mounted to a vehicle body, and a control unit(130). The ultrasonic sensor emits ultrasonic waves into a road surface, and detects the ultrasonic waves reflected by the road surface. The control unit compares ultrasonic wave detecting time with setting time, determines whether the vehicle is overturned, and generates a control signal. An accelerometer(120) detects the vertical acceleration of the vehicle.
