The pipeline conveys a pressurized medium (D) through a bend to a postulated rupture location (7). Should rupture occur there, a safety restraint (6) prevents transverse deflection of the earlier part of the pipework. Spacing (L) between the rupture location and a fixed point (10), as measured parallel to the longitudinal axis (11) of the pipework, is significant. On rupture, the jet reaction force (Fs) on the pipe, caused by pressure medium exiting at the rupture location, sets up a bending moment at the fixed point (10). The spacing is so selected that the reaction force causes the moment of collapse (Mu) of the first pipe section to be exceeded. |
