Novel compounds of formula wherein X is a halogen atom; and R is a hydroxyalkyl group having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; or an acyloxyalkyl group having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, the acyl moiety being an aliphatic acyl group having from 2 to 5 carbon atoms, or an aromatic acyl group having 6 or 10 carbon atoms in the aromatic ring; and acid addition salts of such compounds are prepared by either (a) reacting the compound of formula with a compound of Formula B XCH 2 CH 2 OR and reducing the resultant pyridinium salt or (b) reacting a compound of formula with a compound of Formula B above. Pharmaceutical compositions in conventional forms for oral or parenteral administration and having antitussive activity comprise an above novel compound and a carrier therefor. |
