Each filling head of an ampoule filler comprises a filling tube 27 displaceable vertically to be insertable into the ampoule neck 10a, surrounded by a tubular casing 29, the tube and casing being longitudinally displaceable relative to one another so that when the tube 27 is removed from the ampoule its outlet 32 is disposed within its casing, thus preventing the wetting of the inner wall of the ampoule neck. The ampoules 10 are conveyed by an endless conveyer 11 past a series of successive treating stations 12 where they are washed, dried, sterilized &c., and on reaching station 13 are filled, and are sealed at station 14. The ampoules are suspended by their necks in the conveyer, which is in the form of a wire mesh, and each filling tube depends from a holder 28 in a vertically reciprocable beam 16; its tubular casing depends from a sleeve 31. When the beam is lowered to lower the filling tube into the ampoule, the sleeve strikes an abutment 33 whereby the end 35 of the tube extends from its casing ready for the filling operation, the liquid being supplied through the holder 28. A suction is created between the tube and casing via a bore 37 in the beam when the tube outlet is withdrawn into its casing, Fig. 2, thereby to withdraw any liquid from the end of the tube. On striking the abutment the sleeve is lifted to break the suction. A gauging mandrel 21 is located at the first station, Fig. 1, to force from the conveyer those ampoules having necks that are too narrow to receive the tubular casings of the fillers. |
