PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient and easy method for operating an information retrieval system on a network such as the Internet. SOLUTION: In the information retrieval system, different information item groups are processed so as to be mapped on respective nodes in a node alignment according to the mutual similarity of the information items, whereby similar information items are mapped in the node of the similar position of the node alignment. This system has a data network, an information client system connected to the data network, and at least one information item storage node connected to the data network. The information item storage node has a storage means for storing a plurality of information items and an indexing means for transmitting data drawn from the information items stored in the information item storage node to the client system through the data network. The client system has a means for generating, in response to the data received from the indexing means of the storage node, a node position to each information item expressed by the received data.
