PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interactive program guide and a method associated with it. SOLUTION: The interactive program guide is preferably implemented using a microprocessor-controlled set-top box joined with a viewer's television receiver. The set-top box receives program schedule information and software from a head end TV broadcast center. Preferably, program schedule information for the current day and at least the following six days is stored in the memory in the set-top box. The interactive program guide provides a display mode wherein the viewer can apply restrictive search selection criteria and nonrestrictive sort attributes to the program schedule information.
