<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely prevent big shock when switching forward mode to reverse one due to an operating error while allowing intentional forwarding/reversing operation. <P>SOLUTION: In a control unit 20, when switching to a reverse mode during forward mode of a vehicle, based on a mode signal from an inhibitor switch 22 and detected vehicle speed from a vehicle speed sensor 21, the detected vehicle speed is compared with a first vehicle speed. At the same time, the time when advancing mode is selected before switching over to the reverse mode is compared with the prescribed judgement time. When the vehicle speed is the first vehicle speed or lower and the time when advancing mode is selected is the prescribed judgement time or less, switching to the reversing mode is executed.
