ENCODING METHOD AND APPARATUS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem such as pseudo synchronism or out-of-synchronism caused by erroneous detection of a synchronizing code in an encoding apparatus.

SOLUTION: The encoding apparatus has: a multiplexer 111 for generating a multiplexed code stream 201 by multiplexing a plurality of kinds of variable length codes obtained by compression-encoding an input image signal; and an output encoder 200 for assembling an output code stream 205 by receiving the multiplexed code stream 201. The output encoder 200 inserts the synchronizing code to any one of a plurality of synchronizing code inserting positions periodically predetermined in the output code stream 205 according to a synchronizing code insertion request signal 203 and inserts a stuffing bit which can be decoded backwards from the output code stream into the output code stream 205.
