PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always perform optimum air-fuel ratio control without unnecessarily stopping the control of a variable valve gear.

SOLUTION: Based on the data on the control of the variable valve gear 8, the control history of the variable valve gear 8 ranging from the start of opening to the close of an intake valve 7 is defined after the intake valve 7 is closed or predicted and defined before the intake valve 7 is closed. The amount of fuel injected from a fuel injection valve 12 is controlled according to the defined control history.
